You will find that the majority of apartments suitable for expatriates in Shanghai are two or three bedrooms, some buildings do have a few one bedroom apartments, which are rarely on the market.
When i first arrived in Shanghai in 2008 i had no idea about the real estate market or where the good places to stay were, luckily i ended up in a studio apartment in the Tonji Gardens Apartment building.
The Tongji Gardens Apartment Building is located on 1033 Kangding Lu, nearby Yanping Lu. This section of Kangding Lu is a one way street, which can be troublesome when you are trying to get a taxi to the oposite direction. Its about a 15mins walk to Jingan Temple subway station connecting you to line 2 and line 7.
The Tongji Gardens Apartment Building is generally clean, the walls are thin and you will be able hear your neighbour at night, the layouts of the apartments are quite strange in that they have two levels containing a open raised bed in the studio apartments and the one and two bedroom apartments have a small second level containing the bedrooms.
People living in the Tongji Garden Apartments are a mix of Chinese and Foreign young professionals.
