Three convenient clinics where you can get an STD check in Shanghai

There are plenty of local clinics and hospitals to get an STD check in Shanghai. But if you’re new here and haven’t been taking your Mandarin lessons religiously, the idea of navigating your way around one of the local clinics may prove daunting. For that reason, we’ve compiled a list of three different hospitals and clinics where an STD check can be done with relative ease.

Sexual Health Shanghai
When it comes to making sure things are in working order “down there”, Sexual Health Shanghai, also known as Shanghai’s STD Testing Center, should probably your first line of defense.

A full STD screening consists of two parts. The first part being a blood test that will check for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. The urine test goes over the more infections, those being chlamydia, gonorrhea and other icky things that might be living in your bladder. Along with the basic blood and urine tests, extra screening are also dolled out depending on what plumbing you are equipped with.

The fellas can look forward to a testicular exam alongside the genital herpes screening, while the ladies can get the obligatory screening for trichomonas, hpv and bacterial vaginosis.

Tests can be had a la carte, with individual prices ranging from RMB120, plus another 100 for the lab fee for an HIV test, all the way up to RMB500, plus the lab fee for a gonorrhea test. If things got a little wild last weekend and now you’re feeling the burn, it might be best to just go with the all inclusive STD package option for the sake of your health as well as your wallet. A package deal including ten of the most important sexually transmitted disease tests, can be had for RMB2500 for women, and RMB2414 for men. Regarding English speaking services, while the language level of the doctors varies, (the doctor assigned to the females reportedly has zilch), English speaking nurses are on hand and able to help with translating if necessary. Expect your results to come in within seven to ten days time.

Shanghai Dermatology Hospital
This local hospital is the perfect low frills place to get checked out if your Mandarin is on point, or you aren’t afraid to bumble around without the ability to communicate effectively. A standard STD checkup including tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV and syphilis will set you back around RMB400, plus a nominal registration fee of about RMB18. Since it’s a more local hospital expect a wait time of at least one hour after getting past the registration process. While not many of the nurses on the frontlines speak English, the doctor however does have a little under their belt. Chlamydia results miraculously take just one day, while everything else will need at last a seven day wait period.

American Sino OB/GYN Service Shanghai
If you’re really skittish about going the local route, a host of international or VIP type clinics and hospital services are available. Founded in 2003 American Sino states their mission is to introduce American standard ob/gyn services to China. As such, Western and Chinese team members are American board certified and bilingual, and reportedly, only state of the art equipment is used. While a lot of places offer all-inclusive STD package deals, tests here are done individually in a range of prices. The consultation fee including a meeting with the doc, is RMB500. A syphilis test for instance will set you back just RMB140, HIV RMB450, while a test for say, herpes is a whopping RMB900. On the flip side, while most other smaller hospital and clinics send out their tests to an independent lab, which is what causes the sometimes week long wait for results, testing here is done in house. As a result you’re only looking at 2 hours to no more than three days for your verdict.
